She walks among 2000-pound, free roaming elephants as if they are her children, calling out to each of them by name. Singing to them in a love language all their own. They understand and trust each other completely. This small but mighty woman … standing barely five feet tall is transformed into a giant as groups of elephants, move around her, herding her as one of their own. She sits beneath them rubbing their bellies, hugging their enormous legs, feeding them bananas. Sharing their pain, their happiness, their secrets. Theirs is a bond built on love compassion and respect. This is Metta, Universal Loving Kindness, this is true compassion, this is Lek Chaiii-lert!
The first time I saw a video of Lek, I was moved to tears and ready to jump on the first plane to Thailand and take up her cause to save her elephants. I was mesmerized.
Her smile is captivating, her energy is palpable and her philosophy about all animals, especially elephants, humans and life is truly enlightened.
I believe if people around the world could love the way she does, our humanity would be restored, and this life would be a hell of a lot sweeter.
But what inspires me the most about Lek, is her fierce compassion for all life and her infinite capacity to love even those who hate her and wish her harm. Her heart truly is as big as the 200 hundred elephants she has saved since her journey began in 1996. My favorite Lek quote sums it up beautifully,
“I give them Love because I believe Love can change, Love can tame, and Love can heal”.
Lek Chailert is the amazing BrightLighter who teaches me that when we have the courage to live with compassion and love with an open heart … The world becomes a safer, happier, healthier place for All.
